MUSEUM SEASONAL EMPLOYEE 

JOB DESCRIPTION 

TOWN OF LA VETA 

 Job Summary:  

The Museum Seasonal Employee works under the direction of the Francisco Fort Museum Director (hereafter Museum Director). The Museum Seasonal Employee works in the gift shop, conducts tours, and maintains the Museum collections following national guidelines.  

Representative Duties: 

The following duties are typical for this position. Employees may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address changing Town need and practices. 

 Adhere to operations policies and procedures adopted by the Fort Museum Board and approved by the La Veta Town Board of Trustees. 

  1. Assist in the gift shop including handling POS, gift shop merchandise, inventory control and pricing, display and promotions.  

  1. Properly open and close the gift shop and the fort buildings when the Museum Director is not onsite, following appropriate security procedures. 

  1. Handle all phases of receiving merchandise in an accurate manner, including unpacking, checking packing slips, entering inventory and pricing information into the computer, processing requisitions and vendor invoices, and delivering merchandise to shops. 

  1. Compile daily reports on gift shop operations, visitor attendance and sales; submit to the Museum Director. 

  1. Perform routine cleaning of the gift shop in order to maintain an inviting retail space. 

  1. Conduct visitor tours that inform visitors about the exhibits and local history. 

  1. Be knowledgeable about safety protocols.  

  1. Promote goodwill with patrons, fellow employees, and volunteers. 

 Qualifications and Skills

The following generally describe the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties. 

Knowledge of

  • Local history. 

  • Retail sales and merchandizing techniques. 

  • Procedures for receiving and inventorying stock. 

  • Computers and point of sale systems. 

  • Procedures and national standards for maintaining the Museum collections. 

Ability to

  • Handle gift shop revenue. 

  • Receive incoming merchandise swiftly and accurately, and utilize efficient and imaginative display techniques. 

  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. 

  • Demonstrate tact and diplomacy with the public. 

  • Establish effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. 

  • Maintain accurate records. 

 Education, Experience and Licenses

 Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: 

 Education/Training

High School Diploma or GED. 

 Experience: 

One year of experience in retail sales, receiving clerk, bookkeeping, store manager, or other related experience. 

Demonstrated experience in the management of historical collections. 

 License or Certificate:  

Possess a current Colorado driver’s license. 

Other

      Must be able to pass a background check and random drug screening test
