Last June (2022) in the middle of a drainage project in the Plaza, the archeological consultant with Alpine Archeology discovered a prehistoric hearth. A number of artifacts were unearthed. On June 5th, 2023 additional excavation work (shovel testing) will begin at the site and carbon testing will also be completed. The work is being funded by a grant from History Colorado with matching funds from San Isabel Electric, the Town of La Veta, and private donors. The public is invited to see what is going on during the open hours of the Francisco Fort Museum Tuesday through Thursday of that week 10 am to 4 pm. We are excited to find out more about the story of the early people of the area.
